Apparently America's sweetheart and her beau are staying in this cozy cottage in the Hollywood Hills. I've got to hand it to her, she has good taste in ~~men~~ homes.

I love the neutral palette and all the contrast.

The variety in the window treatments is really very interesting, I love that hint of rose on the edges. I also love that the cocktail ottoman is two separate pieces, that gives so much flexibility to the space.

The scale of the bench at the end of the bed is perfect, if it was upholstered it would be too bulky, the spindles add just the right amount of light and whimsy. And I ADORE the curtains, a great way to introduce a pattern without overdoing it.

I'm a glutton for shiny, luxurious, over the top, but understated opulence. {Yes, it is possible} I love the feel of things, whether it's a satin, faux fur or leather. I've never met a silk velvet I wasn't madly in love with.

I've declared a moratorium on museums because I can't touch the pieces, and I've gotten scolded more than once for sneaking my finger over a ruin. Yes, I realize if everyone touched it it wouldn't be well preserved, but still, I think it should be part of the experience. ;)

Councill Furniture

I love finding new furniture lines that I immediately fall in love with. Councill Furniture was initially an office furniture company that has expanded beautifully into the home. They have gorgeous staples and a number of really exciting and inspiring pieces.

I love the Josie Chest, the pop of color is so unexpected and fun next to the formal and shi-shi Macassar ebony.

The Josef Chest is marvelously chic with the dramatic vase overlay.

The Langdon Cabinet is such a good example of what a coat of unexpected and bright paint can do to a piece. In a wood finish it so serious and formal {which also has it's time and place}.

Councill's upholstery is also great, I'm loving the Chester Sofa, gorgeous lines play up the tufting so well. I adore the nail heads accenting the shape, and those slender legs offer such elegance, and keep the piece from being too boxy and bulky.

I would really like to see the Zachary Lounge with nail heads, or contrasting welting {piping}.

Another dreary day in Park City, the winter likes to linger, like some hearts in questionable romances. Don't get me wrong, I love the snow, and I understand why it would want to remain in such gorgeous scenery, but I'm like a kid craving June and ready for summer.

The vibrant green of the tree branch in this gorgeous apartment expresses my mood precisely. The green is so energetic in the softness of the rest of the room.

Animals & whimsy!

I'm thoroughly inspired by Harry Heissmann's very quirky, yet elegant style. I love the infusion of the unexpected, whimsical pieces in this home. The mushroom stool makes me smile, not to mention the snail front and center. It's such a bold statement, and I imagine the snail meanders from space to space in this home.

Our animals are a very telling piece of our personal narratives, both the ones we adopt and the ones we are intrinsically drawn to. Gracie's portrait is famously featured in the gallery on my living room wall, and there are a number of friends in our lovely front room zoo. Here are a few animals that attracted my attention:

I'm a little stuck in the past, in my personal life and well, I'm not ready to part with that Barbie Suite post. Therefore I have some more pink for you! :D Pink really gets a bad rap for being overly feminine, but I think sometimes it is the perfect dose of whimsy.

We are very accustomed to seeing pink as an accent, and it makes a very eye capturing focal.

But it can do just as well as the majority of the palette. I love the varying shades of pink, as well as the mixture of patterns. I imagine a very interesting person would occupy this home.

Grace Kelly and I have been taking long walks in the park and I've begun a CRAZY workout plan to ready myself for Memorial weekend in Vegas. Which I'm physically exhausted and can't get relaxation out of my mind. What's more relaxing than a the hanging bed, you ask? Well, wevs, I don't know, I just want to show you some! I love the concept, it's so fresh and romantic.

Barbie Suite

I recently saw images of The Palms Barbie Suite by Jonathan Adler, and, well I was kinda disappointed. For those of you who haven't been to my house {some day I'll take pictures} I have a pink velvet, tufted sofa, and if I were to name the style I'd call it Grandma's Barbie Playhouse,

This is just not how you do a Barbie playhouse! I'm sorry, folks at the Palms, but Barbie has WAAAYYY better style than this, and I know it's Adler, and he's genius and you know all the rest, but just ick.

I can't decide what I like the least, the patterned chairs, the garbage bag upholstered sofa, the yellow wicker chairs in the background. Neither myself or any of my Barbie's would be caught drunk and gambled out in this suite.

It's not all a disaster, however, I, shoot, I ADORE the pink poodles, and the sunburst Barbie mirror is so sweet.

And the bathroom gets the elegant whimsy that is Barbie.

It's really the small changes and updates that transform a space. An easy to make any space more current is with lighting. While adding pendants takes more work than changing/adding lamps, it gives you a finished, designer look.

I love stacks of books in decor, {the books you buy say so much about you} I'm particularly enjoying the use of them as furniture instead of as accessories. I think it's such a novel idea {get it!?! lol}. It's a clever idea for those of us that want a unique look without the commitment to a new piece of furniture. Or for those book collectors {guilty} that have more book than case.

I am OBSESSED with dark walls, they offer so much drama and intensity. It really sets the stage for an elegant encounter, whatever you the walls are dressed in become much more impressive. The furnishings also develop a life of their own.

It is important to note that you need plenty of white space {in every example, the ceiling} and loads of natural light to keep the setting from becoming overly moody and somber.

Guess who watched a few Photoshop tutorials last week? If you guessed me, you're right on the money! While I still have a long way to go, I am immensely proud of this creation.

I envision this grouping in an entry, powder, or a dressing room. I love this aged, rustic wood for a mountain home. The shape brings in an ethic vibe that's mimicked with the hanging lights. The bombe chest also has a weathered appearance and its weight balances the vignette.

Art, more than any aspect of a home affirms the soul of the owner. It's such a personal experience, there are things that call out to me that possibly no one else echoes. But it's not always possible, budget wise, to install unique pieces in every room. Enter the perfect opportunity to place a print, I personally detest the cardboard cut out, everybody has it trend, so when I find a print that is unique, I'm ecstatic!

I'm loving this charcoal and ink piece from Lazy Susan, it could fit into any space.

I remember the first time I saw Elizabeth Taylor. I don't entirely recall the context, but I remember deciding that she was celebrated because she was the definition of a woman.

Actually, I think it was a commercial for White Diamonds, as this was in the late 80's...

Besides her beauty, she exemplified femininity, vulnerability.

Spring Chairs

It's an unusually windy day in Phoenix, and while the sun is absolutely glorious, it's not quite warm enough to sit outside. I'm so ready for warm weather, shorts, and sno-cones in the shade. These folding chairs from Anthro are my perfect remedy.

They are solely for indoor use, but I love the bright, yummy colors.

The ethnic print with the weathered wood is marvelous.

Extreme Gallery Wall

I love a gallery wall, it adds so much personality to a space, especially if you're a love junkie like me, and fall in incomprehensible love with a million different pieces. I am swooning over this dramatic floor to ceiling, wall to wall installation at Chris Benz studio, featured on Habitually Chic.

It's cluttered, but it looks great because all the pieces are framed in a similar way, the over-sized white matting on a number of the pieces offers a visual rest, and the same color is repeated consistently in the space. I LOVE the lighted cross, it offers the perfect angular juxtaposition, and leads your eye into the wall.

The other side:

The scale on this side is marvelous. I love the two large pieces anchoring this wall.

And the entire space:

The red upholstery recalls all the splashes on the facing wall, and ties the room together perfectly.

I am a big believer that great design is created over time. Very rarely do I find everything for a space in one round. A fantastic way to give a space that lived in feeling is to incorporate vintage pieces {or items that appear vintage}. These prints are ideal; they're unique, they don't break the bank, and I love that they are in a series, which provides instant charm.

Sooooo, I have a confession to make: I am a fancy girl at heart.

Hence my addiction to mohair, damask print {ahem, my logo} and silk velvets and my design crush on Thai Cong. Opulent almost always trumps, well, anything else in my vocabulary. And I heart with all my heart Bergamo fabrics, they just scream fancy, but in a very lady like tone, and while possibly wearing pearls.
Simple. Clean. Bold. Understated elegance.

I spent last week in Fayetteville, Arkansas. "Wha', who, why were you there," you ask? Well, cuz one of my lovely and amazing clients has a home there. It's one of the most beautiful places, with amazing and wonderful people. Unlike myself, I didn't go camera happy, and in fact, I only took one picture of pure country goodness.

Isn't it pretty? I'm a country girl at heart, although I'd be mostly useless with regard to all things farmy, like understanding machinery, moving heavy things oh, and I don't bake {in my mind-world, being country involves a LOT of baking, I think I get this notion from Paula Deen?}.

My client had a residence in Chicago that has been sold and we moved the furniture from the Chicago condo to Arkansas. It was a furniture mash up of epic proportions, but surprisingly the mixing and matching worked out quite well. However, the week was not quite long enough, so the final images won't exist for awhile. I must have really been out of sorts as I only took 2 pictures of the nearly complete product... Enjoy these, until I get more.

The Acorn antique show this past weekend so much fun! There were some absolutely jaw dropping pieces. I love observing evolution, shows like this one teach us so much about where we've been, not to mention where we're going.

I also pondering the life that particular item lived before it met me. Who had it? How did that person feel about this particular item? Did their heart soar when they met it, like mine does? Ummm, I might be a hoarder. :)

I love these rustic pieces. I love this bench on a porch, and the tin tub would make an adorable planter. The wire egg basket makes me speechless...

I was absolutely obsessed with this display. The bank box was just charming.

I forgot to go back and get these wooden trays. And I am still kicking myself.

There was plenty of shabby chic pieces and accessories. Perfect for a little lady's room.

And for a young gentleman's room, I love these little books. The colors are brilliant.

The Spice of Life

I have decided to try my hand at cooking... I made a mushroom saute EXACTLY the same way I watched Mother make it a few weeks ago, but mine was just not the same... It was curiously bland, and the texture was off. Confusion. I had watched her like a hawk making sure not to miss a step. I ate my failed mushroom experiment anyway, but as I was chewing {I turned it into calamari} it occurred to me how similar this was to an experience I'd had at a home I worked on in Deer Valley.

{I promise you won't have calamari mushrooms if you follow this girls recipe}

The home was furnished, beautifully furnished, but had yet to be accessorized. I was at the house finishing up a few small details at the same time as the cleaners were there. One of the girls commented to me that the house was really pretty, but that it just felt "cold" and "wasn't homey." I had I'm-a-terrible-designer face for a second, but rebounded and said, "We're not quite done with the accessories and artwork."

She looked around thoughtfully, and said, "Yeah, that's really what it is, isn't it?"

In conclusion, furniture is your mushroom, and the accessories are the spices.

This turquoise hurricane is spice at it's finest. I love turquoise, it's a color that is impossible to tame, it will always convey the fantastic adventures of childhood and the unalienable nature of the wild and primitive.These horn bowls are fantastic. Arched Window Drapery

Arched Windows are one of my favorite design elements and add an astounding degree of elegance and character in a space. For all their beauty, they are sometimes difficult to treat, I think we all remember the curved horizontal blinds from previous decades... Let's please never revisit that scenario!

Here is a gallery of ideas for how to treat these windows without covering them, or pretending they don't exist.

I like this treatment, because for its clean simplicity.

This treatment is almost exactly like the one before, the moulding around the nook is very striking and adds drama to the space, as the drapery fabric is repeated on the dining chairs and the nook bench seat.
{While repetition can tie a room together, it can also make it appear very static if not used properly}

Much more formal with the swags.
Again, formal, but with a twist... I couldn't resist.

This is essentially the same as the previous image. I love the colors, but the drape feels short. In my book it is always better to have the drape pool on the ground, or come right to the ground.

See what I'm talking about in the pooling? This room looks much more finished because of the length of the drape. Although when the drapes are drawn you wouldn't see the arched windows, the ambiance created is very dramatic.

I've liked Hillary Duff since she was Lizzie McGuire. {... I watched it with my seesters, fyi...} Sweet li'l Hillary is moving in with her man and leaving this behind. This home explains why designers are an important part of the home buying process. There are a gazillion details that come into play when perfecting ambiance in the home. Designers are on point with the current trends and historical schemes. In addition they can provide valuable cues as to how to get your home to "feel" how you want to live.

Although this is a $7 million home, it's very casual. The wide plank floors set the scene for the home, they're both rustic and elegant, old world and freshly modern. I've felt inundated with white on white lately, I'm very impressed with the warmth of colors used. This is how you do neutrals right - comfortable, but the opposite of blase. I love the the natural textures, the jute rug, the linen slip-covered sofas.

The beamed ceiling is enhanced by the dark slate brown paint. The white walls keep the room from feeling cave like. The dark ceiling is tied in with the depth of color in the sofas as well as the window.

A dungeon inspired kitchen? Yes please! The riveted edge on that counter-top perfectly complements the marvelous chandelier. The heavy mesh on the cabinets is another great addition. I have to note how important the skylight is to this space - without so much natural light, this room could really be a dungeon.

The rug makes my day, I love the feminine lavender tones, and the striations in the rug that make it appear washed out allow it to feel perfectly in place in this neutral landscape. The blue of the sofa screams luxury. I like that the drapery just fades away, blending into the walls. The pooling and the simple cornice box add drama without calling attention.

I rarely get my socks completely knocked off by the catalogs that arrive at The Pigeon House. After a few ooohs, aaahs, and "do I need that?"s I was ready to toss the new Restoration Hardware catalog in the recycle bin when I spied:

Yummm, right? I am sincerely impressed! Their staging is exquisite and precise.

I die for this desk. All that storage so neatly tucked away in a steamer trunk! It's witty perfection.

And this is all before the lighting and accessories. The voyeur in me thoroughly enjoyed both the astonishing new pieces as well as the complexity of the compositions.

I've been working for the past few months on a gorgeous residence in Deer Valley. I designed this custom desk and now I'm deciding that I might need the exact same thing! :)

The picture doesn't do the best job of showing the metal bracing on the legs, but it anchors the chair perfectly and adds stability to the very slender legs. We designed the hutch with a great deal of storage, as the the chair arm height restricted us to pencil drawers. Also there is a cabinet door on the left with vertical storage that matches the drawers on the right.

I love the juxtaposition in this room. It's very formal, but that shade of turquoise and the addition of the intertwined wood back chair adds character and keeps the room from being stale.

I'm in Phoenix at the moment, Mother is one year more beautiful and Baby Sister is officially no longer a Junior High student. Because of everything that has been going on, I've been neglectful in my blogging... To make up for this, here are a few images from my travels.

I am OBSESSED with the new commuter bridge at Hoover Dam that's been in process for the past few years. With the architecture at the Dam being what it is and the scale of this bridge, Atlas Shrugged runs thorough my mind every time I see it. In this case rebar+concrete = Rearden metal... Packaged with American spirit!

I'm a fancy one at heart and I love the color pink more than I will ever admit, I have been developing an infatuation with industrial pieces... Needless to say, no future home of mine will ever resemble the doll house quality of The Pigeon House. Hmmm... Got a little sidetracked... I love these industrial cage lights from Jayson Home and Garden.

This room could be very formal with the fireplace, chandelier and symmetrical furniture arrangement. But it's made very livable with the random placement of the artwork, the rustic ceiling and the garden frames of the chairs in the foreground. I love the neutral colors and the variety of lighting.

Baby Hunger

One of my great friends is having a little girl, Ava Middle-name-yet-to-be-decided, which gives me ample opportunity to be baby hungry and scout furniture, accessories and clothing for the little tyke. From finding the sweetest bassinets and cribs at my favorite antique haunts to stalking people on Etsy, I've really been enjoying constructing a faux nursery.

I am digging this avian mobile made from felted old wool sweaters from mrowe. The detailing is so quaint, and the blue eggs are precious. I love how hand crafted it is!

This bassinet from C.G. Sparks stole my heart. It looks a little lonely in this picture, but with some dressing, it could be perfection. It would add so much character to baby's new space!

Barbara Barry

There is an over abundance of Barbara Barry on the 73rd floor of Trump Tower, Chicago. I'm taken aback at how EXQUISITE and simple her designs are. And with that simplicity, each piece has such immense detailing.

On the Blaine Bed, the height added added to the foot that keeps it from being any ordinary bed. The welting that finishes the lift, terminating in the additional leg.

On the Well Suited Chair, the slight curvature in the exposed wood base keeping this square shouldered, chiseled jaw in line. The sensitive side of the macho man.

The Conversation Sofa, where the single cushion removes any reliance on where each individual's personal space ends. The loose back cushion's variegated sizes beg to be tossed around, arranged per your comfort and support level.

And finally the Nola Ottoman. She had me at hello. The curved crossbracing is elegant and gives the user ample space to stretch out without making contact with the stretchers. The top is sturdy enough to place glasses on, but wouldn't mind giving your feet a rest from that old ordinary floor.

I spent a good amount of time over the past few weeks finding this artist.

I was struck by his painting in a model home, and I couldn't quite make out the signature. Thank goodness for Google. I'm so glad to have figured discovered him.

The style is extremely versatile, with traditional scenes and motifs rendered in a spectacular, loose manner.

I would LOVE to attend a gallery showing of his work! {Not to mention hang one of these works in MY home... One day.. }

Grace Kelly and I are moving back into the Pigeon House. I'm elated, and at the same time my heart is breaking for Gracie. She's going to miss guarding "her" back yard, wrangling the girls, and being nosy at the neighbors. Poor puppy!

I will be finishing up some furniture projects I never quite got started, so that will be quite exciting...

The most successful spaces don't match, so much as they coordinate. I'm always intrigued in a space that breathes in the same manner as it's inhabitants. Personality jubilant in every corner.

This "desk" and I are soulmates. It's an antique clothiers bench complete with spools and light! Isn't it perfectly quaint?

There are plenty more brilliant and absurdly unique pieces at Factory 20. I'm smitten/wondering how I can justify a trip to VA other than to visit the shop... Wait? Is that alone a good enough reason? ;)

Have you met my favorite new designer? He's incredible and I love his description of who he designs for "successful, smart, powerful, gracious enough to be her husband's wife but strong enough to put him in his place."

He's particularly inspiring for me since he's from Nepal! {So am I, fyi} It's great to see someone with that heritage succeeding in an arena other than medicine or engineering.

His designs are all wearable and SO attractive! I love it!

In the last few months I've renewed my appreciation of Oprah. We'd had a separation of sorts for a while, something about her attitude and my perception... After the time we {I} took apart I'm hapy to report that I'm really enjoying our time together.

I've learned quite a great deal from her this last year.

I just stumbled upon this gem of an article. I love the designer's style, and her quote: "I tried to go minimal, but it was a little like going outside without wearing makeup" sums up my design sense succinctly! The bold colors and the layers of intrigue in her furnishings. The color choice and articles were inspired by her multicultural heritage and travels.

The textures used play off each other and enhance each others' characteristics. Note the tent in the background.

Here's a close up of the tent. The furnishings are more subdued {still interesting with the white welt on the sofa and the antique trunk} and the accessories and rug really make an impact.

The artwork in the bedroom is so strong! I love it! The dark displays it well, and enhances it's uniqueness. I also really like the styling here, with the pillows stacked asymmetrically.

I said "the designer" as I was not sure who designed the space, only the stylist Sacha Dunn is noted. Here "she" is {definitely the homeowner}... Sorry I could not find more info.

Urban Outfitters has been chasing my heart for a very long time. Before the store opened in Utah I looked forward to my visits to Arizona in part to see the lovely family and in part to shop, shop, SHOP until I dropped. I'd always return home from my visits wondering what I did for a week.

{In case you were wondering, I ate my mother's AMAZING cooking, had endless heart to hearts with my sisters, and fretted that my suitcase was now morbidly obese and would make me pay extra for all those fab clothes and accessories I'd picked up... I never got worked up about the extra pounds I'd found. :) }

We'd spend hours in UO deciding which shirt was the best. Of course we'd leave not only with the yes's but with all the maybes also {We have impeccable decision making skills}.

I never spent much time on the furniture in the store {shipping = eww} and I have been missing out. I LOVE their stuff, as well as the {best part} price tag.

Weekly Dose of Greenery

I love, love, love the idea of using sustainable products. Some "green" products lose their earth friendlyness in the process such as bamboo textiles. All the processing necessary pollutes extensively, but the feeling of a bamboo cotton blend is mmmm... marvelous!

For textile, Kravet's earth conscious line, Kravet Green is great, they use 100% recycled polyester. Here's to reducing waste!

I used this gorgeous black print on a client's bed last spring. I was worried about it lacking contrast with the Mahogany headboard, but it ended up being very successful.
